If you’re wondering why this beach is so popular, continue reading below and I’ll explain why this beach is a must-visit in 2024.

Karekare Beach is located roughly 40 minutes West from Central Auckland. Located below Piha and above Whatipu Scientific Reserve.

Despite being so close to our largest city, this beach offers a peaceful escape. Found in the Waitākere Ranges, it features more bushland and beach than urban development, making it an ideal spot to unwind away from the hustle and bustle.

THE BLACK SAND

The western coast of Auckland features many black sand beaches, including Karekare.

This black sand is due to volcanic rock that has travelled from Mount Taranaki. It can be carried up the coast as far as Cape Reinga. If you visit one of these beaches during a sunny summer day you’ll often see particles of the sand sparkling.

KAREKARE BEACH WALKS

Karekare Beach not only boasts great surf and captivating views but also offers incredible trails.

Although some trails near the beach are currently closed, the renowned Mercer Bay Loop and Comans Track are still open. A leisurely stroll along the beach itself is also a great option.

As mentioned Karekare also sits north of Whatipu, meaning that if you venture further South, you’ll also come across one of my favourite hikes in the area.

UNIQUE ACCOMMODATION

There are plenty of places to camp near Karekare Beach but if you’re wanting somewhere more comfortable to stay Piha is the best place to look. I often search through Airbnb or alternatively, booking.com.

Being so close to so many incredible beaches makes it a fairly unique stay as it is. However, what makes it even better is that there are plenty to of options to choose from. From a boutique tiny home to a charming batch or alternatively, if a beachfront cabin is more you, Piha offers a range of unique stays with many accommodations nestled in secluded spots.

WĀITAKERE RANGES

Karekare Beach I will recommend over and over but the Waitākere Ranges as a whole is a stunning part of Auckland that deserves to be seen. There are so many incredible spots to enjoy, whether for a walk or a sunset mission. Many of my favourite spots are here, so in my opinion, you really can’t go wrong.

If you want to explore more of Auckland’s West Coast, here are some of the best locations. For those venturing outside of Auckland and looking for more walks and hikes, I have suggestions for the North Island that I hope will help in your exploration.
