THREE SISTERS AND ELEPHANT ROCK LOOKOUT LOCATION
The Three Sisters and Elephant Rock Lookout is situated along Taranaki’s west coast. Heading south, the lookout is accessible after passing Mōhakatino but before Tongapōrutu River Bridge. From State Highway 3 you’ll then turn right onto Pilot Road and drive to the end, where you’ll find a no-exit cul-de-sac. From here, it’s a short walk to the lookout point.

Parking tips
The lookout doesn’t have dedicated parking. However, there are spaces available in the cul-de-sac. Please park thoughtfully in to avoid restricting access for residents or the nearby cemetery.
HOW TO GET TO THREE SISTERS AND ELEPHANT ROCK LOOKOUT
The Three Sisters and Elephant Rock Lookout is in a remote location, so having your own vehicle is essential. There’s also limited public transportation options so self-driving is the most convenient way to reach it.
Having access to an offline map can also be helpful, as coverage can be spotty in places.
BEST TIME TO VISIT AND HOW CROWDED CAN IT GET AT THE LOOKOUT
While you can visit any time of day, sunset is particularly magical. We unfortunately, only managed to visit in the middle of the day but the views are still amazing. As this lookout faces west, it’s a great spot for the evening.
In terms of how crowded, I believe when most people visit this area, their priority is to visit the beach. When we were here there were only two other people and they arrived as we were leaving. Overall, I think no matter what time you visit, this is a peaceful lookout.
PHOTOGRAPHING THREE SISTERS AND ELEPHANT ROCK LOOKOUT
If there’s any chance you’ve had a chance to read some of my other blogs, you’ll know that I’m a big advocate for photographing during golden hour, sunrise and sunset. Soft light makes this the best time for landscapes, and sunset is especially striking on this west coast location.
