Te Waha Point Lookout is one of my favourite viewpoints in the Waitākere Ranges. It offers some of the best scenery and is a lesser-known trail that feels like a hidden gem. A rarity, if you know Auckland.
From this vantage point, you can enjoy panoramic views stretching north over Whites Beach and up the coastline.

Located in the heart of the Waitākere Ranges Regional Park, Te Waha Point Lookout sits along Auckland’s west coast. It’s positioned near Piha and Anawhata, two of Auckland’s most iconic black-sand beaches. This location makes it a prime spot, offering beautiful views of both the Tasman Sea and rugged coastline.
HOW TO GET TO TE WAHA POINT LOOKOUT
To get to Te Waha Point Lookout you’ll need to drive roughly 40 km (25 miles) from the city centre. Unfortunately there aren’t any tours that venture here so best to hire a vehicle if you’re from out of town.
Previously, you could access this scenic trail from the northern end of Piha Beach. However, significant flooding two years ago caused closures to this section. Now, the most reliable starting point is along Anawhata Road.
It will take you about an hour to reach the trailhead and will also require driving down a gravel road, too. This part can also be narrow at times, so even though it’s suitable for most vehicles, best to take your time on this journey.
Parking Tips
Parking at the trailhead along Anawhata Road is limited, particularly during weekends. There is an unofficial parking spot that will hold roughly five to six vehicles. However, if there isn’t any parking available you can park at the Anawhata Beach trailhead and walk the additional 15 minutes to the start of the trail.
KEY INSIGHTS FOR HIKING TE WAHA POINT LOOKOUT
Distance: 2.1 km | 1.3 miles
Elevation: 116 meters
Duration: 45 minutes
Difficulty: Easy-Medium
Trail Type: There-and-back
Open: Year-round
As you start the trail, you’ll notice it’s man-made and well-maintained, offering views across Piha Beach almost immediately. Once the path flattens, you’ll find yourself surrounded by native bush. As it’s a relatively short trail, not long after, the trail ends with breathtaking views over Whites Beach and the stunning coastline. This route combines two trails: the Rose Track and the Laird Thompson Track.
The uphill hike on the way back can be a bit challenging but is absolutely manageable. I tell myself that taking breaks along the way allows you to soak in the incredible scenery.
If you’d like, you can walk down to Whites Beach but be sure to check tide times beforehand. Keep in mind there are no lifeguards, so swimming here can be risky.
Also, for a longer adventure, you can extend your walk along the Rose Track to Fisherman’s Rock or include the White Track as well.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
The ideal time to visit Te Waha Point Lookout is definitely in the afternoon when the light is softer. It also helps to avoid the midday heat.
I would honestly recommend that if you have some extra time combine this walk with Anawhata Beach lookout for sunset.
IS IT SAFE TO TRAVEL SOLO TO TE WAHA POINT LOOKOUT
Whenever I’ve visited Te Waha Point Lookout solo, I’ve felt safe. The trail is well-marked, and the surrounding area is frequented, so likely you’ll cross paths with others enjoying the track.
But before heading out, make sure to inform someone of your plans and estimated return time. Bring water, snacks, and a charged phone. Additionally, checking the weather forecast is crucial, as coastal conditions can change rapidly.
THE WAITĀKERE RANGES
The Waitākere Ranges, a lush expanse of forested hills and rugged coastline, is one of Auckland’s natural gems. Spanning over 16,000 hectares, the ranges boast an incredible variety of flora and fauna, including ancient kauri trees and native birds. This regional park is also steeped in history, offering a glimpse into the cultural significance.
As you probably now know, the ranges are also renowned for its coastal landscapes, offering countless hikes and lookouts. I’ve written a lot about this area, all of which you can find here, in my list of ultimate New Zealand destinations.
