Welcome to Taranaki, one of New Zealand’s best gems. It is a region of stunning natural beauty, from its rugged coastline to its majestic mountain. If you’re looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle, Taranaki is the perfect destination. In this post, I’ll cover 8 must-visit destinations, from picturesque Lake Mangamahoe to the historic Egmont Lighthouse. Whether you’re an adventure seeker or a nature lover, there’s something for everyone in Taranaki.
LAKE MANGAMAHOE
Lake Mangamahoe is an oasis located just a short drive from New Plymouth.
The lake is surrounded by native bush and offers a range of activities for visitors, including walking tracks, picnic areas, and fishing spots. It’s also home to a variety of birdlife, including tui, kereru, and fantails, making it a great spot for birdwatchers.
The track around the lake is an easy walk and takes about an hour to complete. It offers stunning views of the lake and Mount Taranaki. There are also a few lookout points along the way. If you are looking for a short walk, park right at the end of the gravel road, walk up the steps on the right hand side and you’ll find yourself looking at the view in the image above.
HENRY PEAK LOOKOUT
Henry Peak Lookout is one of the best spots in Taranaki to take in panoramic views of the region.
The hike to the top takes a little over three hours round-trip and is a bit challenging, but well worth it. Once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Mount Taranaki, the Pouakai Ranges, and the Tasman Sea. On a clear day, you can see as far as Mount Ruapehu in the distance. Don’t forget to bring your camera along to capture the stunning views!
POUAKAI TARNS
Pouakai Tarns is a stunning alpine destination located in the Pouakai Ranges. If on the main trail you will come past the tarns on the way to Henry Peak Lookout. The hike to the top takes about three hours and as previously mentioned, is a bit challenging. Be prepared for stairs. Along the way, you’ll pass through native bush and tussock grasslands before reaching the tarns. The tarns themselves are small alpine lakes that offer stunning reflections of Mount Taranaki and the surrounding mountains. They are a popular spot for photographers and hikers alike. As the weather can be unpredictable be sure to be prepared with all the things you’ll need for a day trip.
The images above show what a difference time can make. These were taken an hour apart and whilst both times were stunning I’d opt for either sunrise or sunset. With little to no wind you’re in for an absolute treat.
If you are wanting to experience both sunrise and sunset Pouakai Hut is roughly a 20 minute walk from the tarns. You can check it out here.
THREE SISTERS AND ELEPHANT ROCK LOOKOUT
The Three Sisters and Elephant Rock are one of the most iconic landmarks in Taranaki.
Unfortunately we didn’t get time to visit the beach and see them up close and personal. However, if you are traveling along the coast after Mōhakatino and Tongapōrutu Beach, the lookout is a short drive and an even shorter walk. Type into Google ‘Three Sister Lookout’ and it’ll lead you straight there.
Here you will be able to admire the breathtaking views of the Three Sisters, Elephant Rock and the Tasman Sea.
KENT ROAD AND ARAWHATA ROAD
Kent Road is a scenic route that lines up perfectly with Mount Taranaki, so as you can imagine it’s a popular spot for photographers. The road is surrounded by farmland and offers great views of the region’s beauty. Enjoy it at your own pace, whether you’re cycling, driving, or walking. If you’re planning a drive-by, be sure to bring a camera to capture the stunning views, especially if that time is sunrise.
Arawhata Road is the hidden gem version of Kent Road in Taranaki, located on the other side of the mountain. This quiet road is not as well-known amongst photographers.. Yet. I only came across one farmer in the hour of being there, making it the perfect place to go to at sunrise or sunset. The road offers stunning views of Mount Taranaki, possibly even better than Kent Road.
If you are planning a visit, please be aware that at times it is hard to hear oncoming traffic, so above everything, be safe.
THE NEST (AIRBNB)
The Nest is a cozy stay located 40 minutes outside of New Plymouth. Our weekend here was an unreal experience and one that you shouldn’t miss if visiting Taranaki.
It’s nestled in a picturesque setting, surrounded by tussock grasslands and stunning views of the mountain and ocean.
A perfect retreat if you are looking for a quiet, relaxing getaway and has everything you need for a comfortable stay, including a cozy living area overlooking the ocean and a comfortable bed. We spent most of our afternoons on the couch, with a platter, drinking wine and watching the waves. It also has a private outdoor bath, making it the perfect spot to unwind after a day of hiking (if you even leave). Stargazing at night is also highly recommended.
The Nest is a truly stunning spot and is not to be missed!
EGMONT LIGHTHOUSE
Last but not least, we have Egmont Lighthouse, a historic lighthouse located on the western coast of Taranaki.
The lighthouse was built in London in 1864 and shipped to New Zealand where it was originally erected on Mana Island. Later, it was dismantled and moved to Cape Egmont where it stands tall today. The lighthouse is a popular tourist attraction and its easy to see why as it offers stunning views of the coastline and Mount Taranaki.
Egmont Lighthouse is a must-see for anyone looking for a unique and beautiful vantage point.
Taranaki truly is a gem, and I hope this post has inspired you to explore some of the region’s most beautiful destinations.
From the stunning views of Mount Taranaki to the peaceful serenity of Pouakai Tarns, there’s no shortage of natural beauty to be found in Taranaki. And if you’re looking for a unique and charming place to stay, The Nest is not to be missed.
