THE HISTORY
Lake Tarawera holds a fascinating history, intertwined with Māori legends. According to ancient tales, the lake emerged from the tears of Tarawera, a Māori princess grieving for her lost love. But Lake Tarawera’s story took a dramatic turn in 1886 when Mount Tarawera erupted, altering the landscape and creating a unique allure that draws visitors to this day.
When driving to the lake there is a lookout on the right-hand side which is well worth the stop. Here, you can take in the views and learn more about the people and village that lived through the eruption.

BEST TIME TO VISIT
Lake Tarawera will be beautiful at any time of day but having visited at sunrise myself, I can highly recommend. I’ve also heard sunset can be just as stunning.
Sunrise I found to be quite magical as you can be there to experience the lake under the first rays of sunlight. Also highly likely that there won’t be any one else around, or little to none, so you’ll be able to enjoy a serene atmosphere, accompanied by the sounds of nature without any distractions.
CAPTURING LAKE TARAWERA
For photography enthusiasts, Lake Tarawera is a place that you would love to capture. As I mentioned, sunrise was when I visited and it was extremely picturesque with beautiful light. As I was here on an Autumn morning the golden and green hues perfectly balanced out the crystal-clear blue water. The mist rising from the lake added a touch of enchantment, which felt unreal.
