Canyonlands National Park is divided into three distinct districts: Island in the Sky, The Needles and The Maze. Island in the Sky, the closest to Moab, offers stunning rim-side views and easy access to key sights. It’s perfect for those with limited time which is why I also chose this area as it’s great for first-time visitors. The Needles, located southeast, features colourful sandstone spires and is ideal for challenging hikes and overnight backpacking. The Maze is the park’s most remote area, suited for experienced hikers seeking solitude and adventure. Accessed from the west near Hanksville, as the name suggests, it’s filled with canyons that are like labyrinths so requires careful planning.

HOW TO GET TO SHAFER CANYON OVERLOOK

The easiest way to get to Shafer Canyon Overlook is by car. The park is located roughly 40-50 minutes from Moab, and you can easily find it on Google Maps here or by searching ‘Shafer Canyon Overlook Trailhead’. Additionally, from the Island in the Sky Visitor Centre, it’s a short two minute drive to reach the overlook.

However, if you prefer not to drive there is private transport available alongside local tour operators in Moab who offer guided shuttle services to Canyonlands. Unfortunately you won’t find shuttle or bus services within the Island in the Sky.

For a more unique way of getting around Moab and the surrounding areas, consider renting a 4×4 or ATV. I saw these all over whilst I visited. These vehicles are perfect for exploring the rugged backroads and off-road trails that crisscross the region. Undeniably, Moab is known for its adventure-driven culture, and taking a 4×4 or ATV will allow you to discover hidden gems and remote viewpoints that are inaccessible by standard vehicles–with a little fun along the way.

PARKING TIPS FOR CANYONLANDS - ISLAND IN THE SKY

Parking at Shafer Canyon Overlook is really easy and straightforward. There is a small parking area but during peak season it can fill up pretty quickly so make sure to allow time to wait for an open space.

BEST TIME TO VISIT SHAFER CANYON OVERLOOK

Sunrise and sunset are widely regarded as the best times to visit Shafer Canyon Overlook. The lighting during these times is softer, and there is a better chance that there will be less crowds, especially first thing in the morning. I visited during sunset and personally loved it and there was a time where I able to enjoy the space completely alone.

In terms of seasons, fall and spring are the best times to visit. The weather is mild, and the park is less crowded than in the summer, when temperatures can soar. If you visit in the off-season, you’ll have a more relaxed experience without the heat or larger crowds. I visited mid-May and this was the perfect time – minimal crowds and perfect weather.

Overall though, I think no matter what time you visit Shafer Canyon Overlook it’ll amaze you.

CAN IT GET CROWDED AT SHAFER CANYON OVERLOOK

Shafer Canyon can get crowded, especially during peak season. However, the overlook is large enough that even during busier times, you can find a spot to enjoy the view.  As mentioned above, if you’d like to avoid the crowds, aim for an early morning visit or come during the off-season in spring or fall.

IS IT SAFE TRAVELLING UTAH SOLO

Utah consistently ranks as one of the safest states in the U.S., with low crime rates so as a solo female traveller, I never felt uneasy during my visit. The park is also well-travelled, and I met several other solo adventurers along the way.

I’ve gone into a little more depth in my hiking Utah solo blog post about my time in this amazing state if you would like to know more.

PHOTOGRAPHING SHAFER CANYON OVERLOOK

Shafer Canyon Overlook is a great spot for photography and with there being plenty of wide and open spaces it’s easy to capture even if you’re travelling solo. The best view is from the very end of the lookout as it offers uninterrupted, sweeping views of the canyon.

If you’re feeling adventurous there is more to see through the narrow section to the right as you’re at the end of the lookout. This hidden viewpoint offers another unique angle of the canyon.

I visited towards sunset and so glad I did, it was a moody day so not the best lighting but it was much softer and great to photograph. Alternatively, I can imagine sunrise would be equally as stunning.
