Pukehina is a beachfront town found on the East Coast of New Zealand’s North Island. If travelling from Auckland it’s roughly 280km and will take three and a half hours to drive. The closest city is Tauranga which is a little under 50km away and a 40 minute drive.

Even though it may feel distant, this seclusion is a part of it’s charm. It’s a place where you can truly relax and unwind. However, if you need a dose of civilisation and sustenance, Te Puke is only a short 20 minute drive away.

One of the unique things about Pukehina is that it has a single road in and out. Being located five minutes off State Highway 2, it’s not a town that visitors stumble upon by chance. Instead, those who journey here do so with purpose, meaning that it’s quite the retreat.

PUKEHINA BEACH

The beach stretches 25km in length. As it is one road in and out you’ll find homes lined right along the dunes. Between houses there are numerous pathways leading to the sand for easy access.

Pukehina boasts soft, white sand, though depending on recent weather, you may encounter sections of washed-up shells on shore.

As it is a long stretch the beach there is ample space for walks in the sun. In the mornings I’ll often find I have the beach mostly to myself, maybe sharing with a couple of others.

During the bustling summer months, you’ll encounter a variety of people, from fishermen on their four-wheelers to families building sandcastles. It’s also a popular beach for surfers and boogie boarders. What I adore about this place is that there is plenty of room for everyone.

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation options in Pukehina span from a campground (which is very well maintained) to boutique homes. You won’t find any hotels here, this is still an untouched part of New Zealand which has kept its small town charm.

If you’re looking for something a bit boujee Pukehina Retreat and Lodge is a great option. There are also plenty of options on AirBnB

One tip: If you are wanting to freedom camp in Pukehina there are opportunities for this. You’ll find spots for campervans at the start of Pukehina Parade (to the right after the straights), about halfway down opposite the diary and right at the end, near the surf club.

QUIET

As mentioned above, this is a quiet town, where a decent amount of the population lives here full time. Neighbours look after each other and yes, during the summer months it can get busy. But for the most part, it is a place to come and unwind, a very different feeling for a city dweller like myself. One that I appreciate every time I visit.

ACITIVITIES IN PUKEHINA

Even though it’s small, it’s mighty with the amount of activities that are available.

When summer rolls around, the surf lifesavers are out and about, ensuring a safe swim. Just keep in mind, the water can get deep pretty quickly, so make sure to take care. This also makes it ideal for surfers who you will find out in the water year-round.

Close to the surf club, there’s a boat ramp, perfect for launching into the Waihi Estuary before heading out to the Pacific for a day on the water. Fishing is also encouraged, and you’ll often find competitions taking place. The fishing club across from Midway Park conducts the weigh ins. Behind the fishing club is also where you’ll find the tennis courts and skate park.
