If you’re wanting to know the best locations for landscape photography in New Zealand, this blog post has you covered. Below are images of some of the most incredible spots I’ve been lucky enough to visit. Alongside this you’ll also find links to comprehensive guides for insights on everything you need to know.
Auckland isn’t just where I live—it’s been home for quite some time now. Beyond the daily grind and a great company of friends, what’s kept me here is the incredible variety of landscapes. From the North Shore to the East Coast and especially the Waitākere Ranges, there are spectacular sights to be explored.
The Bay of Plenty (BOP for short) is where I spent my childhood years. For obvious reasons it’s an especially meaningful place to me and since I grew up here I’ve got some recommendations up my sleeve. This region covers quite a large portion of the East Coast of the North Island so there are many gems to explore and enjoy.
CANTERBURY
Canterbury stands as the largest region of the South Island, spanning the majority of its East Coast. Encompassing Christchurch city, Timaru, Lake Pukaki, and Lake Tekapo, it also boasts one of my personal favourites; Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park.
This region offers an array of unforgettable experiences. Whether you’re marvelling at the National Park from above with Mount Cook Ski Planes & Helicopters, embarking on the scenic Hooker Valley track, or basking in the vibrant hues of lupins in full bloom during the summer, Canterbury is a region you don’t want to have slip from your itinerary.
COROMANDEL
Along the North Island’s East coast sits the Coromandel. This region is a must-visit, offering more than its share of opportunities to capture some incredible New Zealand landscape photos. From stunning hiking trails to pure, white sand beaches, there’s plenty to keep you busy. Undoubtedly, I’ve been lucky enough to explore a substantial part of this area and these would be some of my favourites. EAST COAST
The East Coast region of New Zealand exudes a rugged charm through its diverse landscapes. Combined with the lush vineyards of Hawke’s Bay, it has a perfect balance of both opportunities for exploration and the ability to slow down and enjoy the finer things in life.
NORTHLAND
The beautiful Northland is home to the Waipoua Forest, its ancient Kauri trees and the historic, sacred Waitangi Treaty Grounds. Additionally, among many other beautiful spots, its stunning coastlines and rich cultural heritage, make it a must-visit. Northland offers abundant beauty to be captured with stunning views, hidden bays, waterfalls, and lush forest hikes. Below are just some of these gems. OTAGO
Otago has been the region that I have primarily spent my time whilst exploring the South Island, and for good reason. The New Zealand landscape photos opportunities are plentiful, promising a rich experience regardless of the season.
Make sure you allow yourself ample time to soak in the beauty as there are plenty of stunning sites to capture. Equally stunning are Bobs Cove, Glenorchy, Arrowtown, Arrow Junction and Crown Range, just to name a few. Also adding some amazing walks (this one is an absolute must) and a few local wineries will be a perfect touch to your adventure.
SOUTHLAND
As you journey deeper into the southern reaches of New Zealand, you’ll be welcomed with more incredible views. In this region lies the renowned Fiordland National Park, where the inspiring Milford Sound awaits alongside the invigorating challenge of the Lake Marian Track.
As you venture further, you’ll hit the most Southern city of the South Island–Invercargill. Here you will find the bridge between the South Island and Stewart Island. Although I haven’t explored much of Southland the following parts that I have visited were my favourites.
TARANAKI
Taranaki and specifically Mount Taranaki is one of the North Islands best gems. It’s a region perfect for anyone, whether you’re an adventure seeker, nature lover or here for the photography.
In Taranaki, there is an array of incredible destinations. From the reflective Pouakai Tarns to the iconic Egmont Lighthouse, and the inviting accommodations at The Nest, to the scenic charm of Kent Road, each location shares a common thread – the breathtaking backdrop of Mount Taranaki, majestically gracing the skyline.
WAIKATO
The Waikato region features pastures, wide open spaces, rolling green hills, and beautiful countryside. You may also have heard of a small film series called Lord of the Rings. To no surprise this is also where you can find the famous Hobbiton. Outside of incredible film sets, there are some other great New Zealand landscapes you can discover. Below are some visuals of a couple favourites.
WEST COAST
The wild and rugged West Coast of the South Island harbours gems such as Haast Pass, Hokitika Gorge, and Fox Glacier. Each of which offers unparalleled opportunities for New Zealand landscape photos. The region is known for it unpredictable weather patterns but the moody atmosphere adds its own charm to the experience. Below are two of the spots I was lucky enough to visit on my short journey.
In summary, these are some of the best New Zealand landscape spots that I have been lucky enough to photograph and visit over the years. I hope this blog post has been helpful in giving you some visuals and expectations of what it’s like to travel this beautiful country. From incredible viewpoints to black sand beaches, there is so much here to offer so enjoy the journey and I look forward to hearing all about your adventures.
