This little beach does require a small walk, but trust me when I tell you it’s well worth it! Read on below for everything you need to know.

Located in the Coromandel, there are many great hidden gems along this coastline. Even though Lonely Bay Beach is found in a popular area of the region, due to the short walk required to get there and being close to Cooks Beach, it’s not as crowded as you may think.

PARKING

Parking can be found turning right just off Purangi Road. This is a gravel road and has access to both Lonely Bay Beach and Shakespeare Lookout.

Shakespeare Lookout parking is a little further than Lonely Bay. Lonely Bay is roughly five minutes from Purangi Road but make sure to take the turn off to the first parking lot.

LONELY BAY BEACH WALK

The walk to Lonely Bay Beach is a short one but there are a few stairs you’ll need to conquer. You’ll be led down to the beach initially, so returning to your car will be the hardest part. However, it is measly five minutes, and well worth it!

To get a better gage of what the walk will be like, you can check out AllTrails here.

If you’re wanting to experience the headland and up for a longer walk, Shakespeare Cliff Loop Track is a great option. This will take you from Cooks Beach, around Shakespeare Cliff Scenic and Historical Reserve. It can also include the walk down to Lonely Bay Beach if you wish.

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation is easy to come by near Lonely Bay Beach. From batches to boutique hotels there’s plenty to choose from.

If you have a group, and a great budget I would highly recommend 970 Lonely Bay Lodge. It’s such an exquisite accommodation, with incredible views and close to the beach. Also a great wedding venue (just saying..).

Otherwise, if you would like to discover more of the Coromandel, there are some great townships nearby. These include Tairua, Whitianga and Whangamata.

Alternatively, if you’re more of a camping enthusiast, there are a range of different campsites available as well as huts
