Nestled within native bush, the lake provides scenic walking tracks, picnic areas, and plenty of fishing spots. Birdwatchers will also be happy with the diverse birdlife, which feature tui, kereru, and fantails.

If this sounds like a bit of you, read on as I have everything you need to know about this amazing destination.

Lake Mangamahoe is located in the region of Taranaki on the North Island of New Zealand. The closest town is New Plymouth, with its city centre roughly a 15 minute drive from the lake.

LAKE MANGAMAHOE PARKING

There are plenty of designated parking lots alongside Lake Mangamahoe Road. All of them easily accessible, although it really does depend on your choice of activity as to where you park. Just to note that it’s best to look in advance as it is a tight road and hard to u-turn.

ACCOMMODATION

Due to Lake Mangamahoe being located close to New Plymouth, there are plenty of stays to choose from. Here you can find a range of Bed and Breakfasts alongside hotels, and more personal stays with a host.

For specific recommendations, I have a couple that might entice you. The first would be Mangorei Heights. This stay is a little out of town but its location means great access to Mount Taranaki hiking trails. The views are also incredible and there is a tub to revitalise in after a big day. Say less.

If the city is more your vibe, don’t look any further than King and Queen Hotel Suites. It’s central and close to many of the great New Plymouth cafes and restaurants. It also screams luxury.

Otherwise, if you’re looking for something more homely Cosy Country Cottage is a great option. Located out of town, you’ll enjoy the quiet countryside life whilst here.

As a small bonus suggestion, you can’t go past The Nest which is located 40 minutes outside of New Plymouth. It’s nestled in a picturesque setting, surrounded by tussock grasslands and stunning views of Mount Taranaki and the ocean. Stargazing here is also highly recommended.

TARANAKI

While Lake Mangamahoe is a stunning location in Tarakani, there’s so much more to explore in the region that should be on your list.

Some of my other highlights were the hike to the Pouakai Tarns and Henry Peak Lookout. Kent and Arawhata Roads are also a must-visit. If you’re wanting more info on some of the best places to see whilst in the region, my comprehensive guide on great Taranaki destinations has everything you need to know.
