In the last couple years Kent Road has become one of those famous spots that you see all over Instagram. And even though it’s super popular, it’s well worth seeing for yourself.

If you’ve searched for Kent Road, you probably don’t need much convincing to visit. But if you keep reading, I’ll reinforce that interest and provide all the information you need to visit it yourself. I’ll also add in some additional photogenic spots that should be on your Taranaki bucket-list.

Okay, I’m unsure of what magic occurred to have Kent Road and Mount Taranaki line up perfectly but I’m really happy it happened. What really makes this place even more unbelievable is when the lighting is just right. Both times I’ve visited it’s been first thing in the morning, either for sunrise or just after. I enjoy this time as it is much quieter, and the light is stunning, although I have heard that around sunset is also incredible.

WHERE TO FIND KENT ROAD

Kent Road is pretty easy to locate on Google Maps, but if you are looking for the precise location of where everyone gets ‘that’ shot, you can click here or alternatively, the coordinates are below.

PARKING

There are no designated parking spots along Kent Road, but as it is surrounded by farmland there are usually spaces to park on the side of the road.

Important note: Please be careful when parking and walking along this road. Even though it can be quiet, farms surround the area so there are plenty of trucks and other vehicles that pass through.

ACCOMMODATION AROUND KENT ROAD

There are plenty of stays to choose from in the New Plymouth area and there’s a couple of recommendations that I highly suggest.

King and Queen Hotel Suites: Ideal for the city lovers. This central hotel is close to New Plymouth’s best cafes and restaurants and exudes luxury.

Mangorei Heights: A bit out of town but perfect for accessing Mount Taranaki hiking trails. The views are incredible, and there’s a tub to revitalise in after a big day. How good.

Cosy Country Cottage: For a more homely feel, this option outside of town offers a peaceful countryside experience.

The Nest: This picturesque spot, located 40 minutes from New Plymouth has stunning views of Mount Taranaki and the ocean. It’s outdoor tub is phenomenal and tussock grasslands surrounds you. Stargazing here is also a must-do.

THE OTHER KENT ROAD – ARAWHATA ROAD

Arawhata Road, the hidden gem of Kent Road, lies on the other side of the mountain and for the most part remains a well kept secret. It offers breathtaking views of Mount Taranaki, potentially even more so than Kent Road.

LAKE MANGAMAHOE

Lake Mangamahoe, just a short drive from New Plymouth, is a stunning destination surrounded by native bush. There are also a few great lookout points which you shouldn’t miss. My guide on this Taranaki gem explains everything you need to know about this destination.

THREE SISTERS AND ELEPHANT ROCK LOOKOUT

The Three Sisters and Elephant Rock are iconic landmarks in Taranaki. If you’re traveling along the coast after Mōhakatino and Tongapōrutu Beach, the lookout is a short drive (and an even shorter walk).

POUAKAI TARNS

The Pouakai Tarns are small alpine lakes which offer stunning reflections of Mount Taranaki. Located in the Pouakai Ranges, the hike to the top takes roughly three hours and is challenging but so worth it.

For more information on this hike, I’ve written all about it in my Pouakai Tarns Hiking Guide.

EGMONT LIGHTHOUSE

Egmont Lighthouse, a historic landmark was built in London in 1864 and then shipped to New Zealand. Found on Taranaki’s western coast this is a popular stop in the area as it offers stunning views of the lighthouse with Mount Taranaki in the background.

HENRY PEAK LOOKOUT

Henry Peak Lookout is located roughly 30 minutes from the Pouakai Tarns. It is one of the best spots to take in panoramic views of Taranaki and on a clear day, you’ll see as far as Mount Ruapehu.

Kent Road has become an Instagram sensation for good reason—its stunning views of Mount Taranaki are iconic. While it’s popular, it’s a must-visit spot worth experiencing firsthand. I also hope that in this post you have seen other picturesque locations in Taranaki that you’d love to see and will complete your visit.
