NORTH ISLAND

As mentioned in my post about North Island photography locations, this part of New Zealand is diverse in its landscapes. From incredible volcanos to black sand beaches, I’m lucky to say that we have it all.

AUCKLAND

Allocate 2 days

Although Auckland is great, it is much more than a city. Here you can immerse yourself in its culture, relish great food, and enjoy panoramic views, but make sure you don’t miss out on exploring the other amazing parts that is has to offer. Two days is plenty; a day in the city and I would suggest to spend the other in the Waitakere Ranges. Here you will be able to experience coastal walks and our black sand beaches.

NORTHLAND

Allocate 4 days

Northland is vast and there is plenty to see. Whether you’re into beaches or hikes, this region offers plenty. A road trip is a must, allowing you to discover Waipoua Forest with its ancient Kauri trees and the historic Waitangi Treaty Grounds. Four days is a good amount of time to explore and I would highly suggest checking out this itinerary here.

CENTRAL (ROTORUA, MOUNT MAUNGANUI, TAUPO)

Allocate 3 days

Each of these regions offer so much. Rotorua being fuelled by adventures that will get the adrenaline going, Mount Maunganui known for its shopping, eateries and famous for the great maunga (mountain), itself and Taupō, with its beautiful lake and Huka falls. As you’re covering a bit of ground, you’ll find yourself quite busy. If you’re wondering how many days you will need to travel in these New Zealand regions, three is enough as it doesn’t take long to travel between Rotorua and the Mount.

EAST COAST

Allocate 2 days

The East Coast region of New Zealand exudes a rugged charm through its farmland-esk landscapes. It is also contrasted with the lush vineyards of Hawke’s Bay which truly have some of the best wines.. And views to boot. Two days here will be plenty. In this time you will be able to visit Te Mata Peak (which you can learn more about here) and tick off a few wineries.

WEST COAST

Allocate 2 days

There’s much of the West Coast that can be explored but Taranaki is one of the North Islands best gems. Every great location here shares a common thread – the breathtaking backdrop of Mount Taranaki gracing the skyline. Give yourself at least two days here. You’ll want to do a hike (my favourite being Pouakai Tarns) and explore places like Egmont Lighthouse and the charming Kent Road. Also make sure you check out the incredible accommodation at The Nest for your stay.

WELLINGTON

Allocate 2 days

You may have heard the saying “you can’t beat Welly on a good day” and it’s not wrong. The capital is an absolute must, known for its great coffee and vibrant arts scene. The waterfront is also a stunner on one of those good days, too. My recommendation on how many days you need to travel Wellington, New Zealand would be two. This will give you time to wander along the stunning waterfront and explore Te Papa, art galleries, and the city’s unique charm on foot. I would also add a walk up Mount Victoria into the mix, too!

My suggestion for how many days you need to travel the North Island, New Zealand is 15 days. You could explore it for much longer however, I believe just over two weeks strikes the perfect balance. This time allows you to explore the incredible landscapes, unwind on picturesque beaches and experience everything the North has to offer.

SOUTH ISLAND

As much as I love the North, the South feels like you’ve stepped into a whole other world. More vast—full of snow-capped peaks, beautiful landscapes, and an unfiltered, raw beauty that will leave a lasting impression.

OTAGO

Allow 5 days

The Otago region is where I have spent most of my time when exploring the South Island. No matter what you season you visit, there is so much to experience. In order to see and do as much as you can, I would allow 5 days. This will give you enough time to explore the amazing walks (for one you absolutely should not miss, click here), taste at incredible wineries and see some stunning sites like Bobs Cove, Glenorchy, Arrowtown, Arrow Junction and Crown Range.

SOUTHLAND

Allow 3 days

As you venture further South, the beauty unfolds with increasingly stunning views. Make sure to include marvelling at Fiordland National Park, home to the remarkable Milford Sound and the challenging yet rewarding Lake Marian Track. You also have Invercargill which is the bridge between the South Island and Stewart Island. If Southland is on your list and you’re wondering how many days you need to travel here, in New Zealand consider 3 days. While you could easily spend more time exploring, this amount of time offers a well-rounded glimpse into what the region offers.

Just to note: Make sure to visit Milford Sound in the rain. This way you’ll be able to experience the incredible waterfalls in full force.

CANTERBURY

Allow 3 days

Canterbury is the largest region of the South Island which covers a majority of the East Coast. This includes Christchurch city, Timaru, Lake Pukaki and Lake Tekapo, alongside a favourite of mine, Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. Three days here isn’t nearly as enough as you could spend but it will give you ample time to experience everything you need to for a first visit, including the stargazing at Chameleon Stargazing or Hooker Valley track. Summer is also a great time to explore as you will see lupins in full bloom.

WEST COAST

Allow 2 days

The rugged West Coast of the South Island deserves 2 days for full emersion. From the majestic Haast Pass to the turquoise beauty of Hokitika Gorge and the majestic Fox Glacier, this region promises an array of landscapes. But be prepared for unpredictable weather, even during warmer months. When I travelled through here it was summer but still an extra layer was needed. If this is also the case for you, embrace the moody ambiance as it adds a unique charm.

NELSON-TASMAN AND MARLBOROUGH

Allow 3 days

Although I haven’t personally visited Nelson-Tasman and Marlborough, I have heard many positive things and received some great suggestions. From amazing vineyards to exploring Nelson Lakes National Park, there is much to choose from. There is also Waikoropupū Springs, and if you have longer period of time conquer hiking Abel-Tasman or fully sending it with a helicopter tour. In order to make the most of these regions, I would set aside 3 days. Nelson-Tasman’s charming landscapes and Marlborough’s renowned vineyards make for a delightful combination, ensuring a great experience.

As you plan your New Zealand itinerary I hope this guide has helped you find out how many days you need to travel New Zealand. From the vibrant North to the majestic South there is plenty here to see and do. Five weeks sounds like a long time but trust me when I say you will need this time in order to travel with intention and gain some incredible experiences.
