KEY INSIGHTS FOR THE RAINBOW FALLS WALK

Distance: 0.6 km | 0.4 miles

Elevation: 30 meters

Duration: 15 minutes

Difficulty: Easy

Trail Type: There-and-back

Open: Year-round

The short walk to Rainbow Falls in Kerikeri, New Zealand, is one of the easiest waterfall walks in the region. The path to the base of the falls is well-maintained, easy to follow and guides you through forestry, leading to multiple viewing platforms.

Once you’ve worked your way through the lookouts and are at the base you’ll have a straight on view but as this space gets crowded we continued along the unmarked trail beyond the falls. The path winds through dense native bush, weaving over exposed tree roots and boulders. While not an official track, it’s well-trodden by those looking (like us) for a unique viewpoint.

This part of the trail will take you right beside and then in the cave behind Rainbow Falls. Offering a completely different perspective with the water thundering down just meters away. Just make sure watch your step—the rocks here can be slick.

You’ll also see plenty of people swimming in the pool at the base of the falls. On a warm day it’s an inviting spot for a dip with the water being crisp but refreshing.

Whether you just here to see the falls or extend your walk on trails like the Kerikeri River Track, Rainbow Falls is a spot worth exploring at your own pace.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The best time to visit Rainbow Falls is in the morning when the light is softer and the area is quieter. As the day continues, particularly in the warmer months you’ll find many more visitors arrive. While swimming is a major draw in summer, the viewing platforms often become busier too. During the colder months, the falls are still stunning and you’ll find fewer people around.

Even with the crowds I think that summer is the best time to visit. Although the falls aren’t at their peak, its a nice time to take a dip and enjoy the lush surroundings.

HOW CROWDED IS RAINBOW FALLS?

Rainbow Falls can get quite crowded, especially during weekends and holiday periods. On our visit which was during the Christmas holiday period, (the busiest time of year) there were 50 or more visitors at the viewing platforms plus others in the water.

The unmarked trail which will take you behind the falls or if continuing along the Kerikeri River Track will provide much quieter spots for those seeking a more secluded experience to enjoy the scenery.

PHOTOGRAPHING RAINBOW FALLS

Rainbow Falls in Kerikeri, New Zealand, offers many opportunities to whip your camera out, with multiple vantage points. The elevated viewing platforms allow for wide-angle landscape shots, while the base of the falls is ideal for experimenting with long-exposure techniques to capture the silky movements of water. With the light shifting throughout the day, and as you move into different scenery adjusting your camera’s manual settings will be key. Morning is ideal for softer, more even light, but even then, you’ll be moving in and out of shadow so just something worth being wary of so you’re not under or overexposing your shots.
