The Anawhata Beach Track is a hidden gem on Auckland’s rugged west coast. Known for its pristine black sands, stunning sunsets, and incredible scenery, this track offers a quieter, more peaceful experience from busier tourist hotspots like Piha Beach.
This is one of my favourite places to visit along this coastline and in this guide I’ll explain all the reasons why.

ANAWHATA BEACH TRACK LOCATION
Anawhata Beach is nestled within the Waitākere Ranges, about 50 kilometres west of Auckland CBD.
HOW TO GET TO ANAWHATA BEACH
Since the Anawhata Beach Track is in a fairly remote part of Auckland, having your own vehicle is essential. From Auckland CBD, the drive takes around 1.5 hours.
To begin, follow State Highway 16 toward Waitākere, then turn onto Scenic Drive. From there, take Piha Road which will then take you onto Anawhata Road. At the road’s end, a small carpark signals the start of the walking track. You’ll notice that the last part of the journey is gravel, which at times can be quite narrow so likely you’ll need to go much slower. However, even though it is gravel you’ll find that it’s suitable for most vehicles.
There are no public buses or shuttles that serve this remote area. But if you’d like to visit other parts of the Waitākere Ranges there are tours that visit more popular areas like Piha Beach.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE AREA
The Waitākere Ranges Regional Park surrounds Anawhata Beach, home to some of Auckland’s most iconic coastal and forested landscapes.
The rugged coastline, dramatic cliffs, and Anawhata Stream all contribute to the area’s unique charm. There is also plenty of native wildlife so keep an eye out for tūī, fantails, and kererū. And like many west coast beaches, Anawhata’s sand is volcanic, which creates a stunning contrast during golden hour and sunset.
KEY INSIGHTS FOR HIKING WALKING ANAWHATA BEACH TRACK
Distance: 2.9 km | 0.5 miles
Elevation: 172 meters
Duration: 1 hour
Difficulty: Easy
Trail Type: There-and-back
Open: Year-round
After parking, you’ll begin your walk by passing through the gate and continuing along the same gravel road you drove in on.
The track starts with a gentle downhill slope that gradually becomes steeper. Lush native bush lines both sides of the gravel path, but as you round the first corner, you’ll catch a glimpse of Anawhata Beach to your right. The trail continues for a short distance before being lead deeper into the bush. Before you know it, you’ll arrive at the beach entrance.
Overall, the Anawhata Beach Track is a relatively short hike. It’s suitable for most fitness levels but does include some incline on the way back.
BEST TIME TO VISIT ANAWHATA BEACH
The west-facing location of Anawhata Beach usually translates into incredible sunsets, making evening the best time for a visit. I’ve often spent the afternoon here, just enjoying the place.
While it’s common to see a few other visitors (especially at the lookout, which we dive into more below), there have been times when I’ve had the place entirely to myself or am far enough away from others that it feels that way.
PHOTOGRAPHING ANAWHATA BEACH
Anawhata beach is a pretty photogenic place with a diverse range of natural features to capture. The striking black sand, rugged rock formations and even the tide pools that form around the rocks.
As mentioned earlier, the best time to photograph Anawhata Beach is during the late afternoon, golden hour, or sunset. The warm, soft light during these times enhances the natural beauty of the Waitākere Ranges.
The beach’s expansive layout allows plenty of room for experimentation. Be sure to explore fully—each corner can offer a new perspective, from hidden rock pools to panoramic views of the Tasman Sea.
IS IT SAFE TO TRAVEL SOLO TO ANAWHATA BEACH
Whenever I’ve visited Anawhata Beach on my own I’ve always felt safe. Often there’s others around, whether it be people who are exploring the beach, same as you, fisherman or surfers. However, if you are travelling on your own make sure to inform someone of your plans, as parts of the Waitākere Ranges have limited service.
OTHER SPOTS TO VISIT IN THE AREA
TE WAHA POINT
For an equally stunning yet lesser-known viewpoint, Te Waha Point is a must-visit. Begin your walk from Anawhata Road, descending through native bush and you’ll come to the end of the trail which has an incredible view over Whites Beach. The return uphill is a bit of a challenge, but the vista stretching up the coastline is well worth the effort. I would honestly recommend that if you have some extra time combine this walk with Anawhata Beach lookout for sunset.
PIHA BEACH
If you’re exploring the west coast, don’t miss Piha Beach. Known for its iconic Lion Rock, strong surf and like other west coast beaches, its black sand it’s a favourite but more popular spot to visit when in the Auckland area.
COMANS TRACK
For another epic walk, try out the Comans Track. This trail will take you through lush forestry and along the coastline with beautiful views along the way. It also includes the famous Mercer Bay Loop track so you’re getting a two for one experience.
INSIDER TIP - ANAWHATA BEACH LOOKOUT
Also, if you’re looking for a great lookout over the beach that may be a little more secluded than what you see at the carpark, head towards the beach as you plan to but on the first bend to the right you’ll spot a path. This will lead you straight to the lookout, with incredible views of Anawhata Beach and the Waitakere Ranges.
My recommendation is to visit Anwahata Beach for golden hour and then the lookout for sunset. It’s also a perfect place for a packed picnic.
