Piha Beach lies on Auckland’s west coast of New Zealand, approximately 40 kilometres from the city centre. It’s part of the Waitākere Ranges, a region celebrated for its black sand beaches, native forests, and hiking trails.

HOW TO GET TO PIHA BEACH

Reaching Piha Beach from the city is straightforward. It’s 45-minute drive through West Auckland and the scenic roads of the Waitākere Ranges.

Public transportation will only get you so far to Piha and options are limited, so if you’re visiting renting a car is the most convenient way to get there. If you’re comfortable biking, you can enjoy the challenge of the hilly terrain, though the journey is best suited to experienced cyclists.

There are also GetYourGuide tours which include transport. Additionally it will give you an insight to Auckland, its surroundings and included is a guided walk on Piha Beach.

PARKING

Piha Beach provides several parking areas, but these can fill up quickly, especially during weekends and holidays. However the parking along Piha Beach is extensive from Marine Parade South to Marine Parade North, and North Piha Carpark. Your choice of parking really depends on which end of Piha Beach you want to start from. With all options just a short walk away to the beach, it’s convenient no matter where you park up.

BEST TIME TO VISIT PIHA BEACH

The best time to visit Piha Beach depends on your interests, but sunset is universally stunning. During summer, longer daylight hours and warmer temperatures make it ideal for swimming and sunbathing. Autumn and winter bring moody skies, dramatic sunsets and fewer crowds.

I’ve visited at a range of different times and the hours leading up to sunset are always my favourite. With being located on the western coast, golden hour is particularly stunning and worth seeing if you have the time.

WHAT MAKES PIHA BEACH SO UNIQUE

Piha Beach’s unique character comes from its black volcanic sand, wild surf, and the towering Lion Rock. One of the first things you’ll notice when visiting the beaches along the west coast is that the sand is rich in iron which makes it shimmer in the sunlight. Piha is particularly famous for this.

What also makes Piha so unique is Lion Rock. Standing in centre and at 52 m (171 ft) is a reminder of Piha’s volcanic origins. The beach is also flanked by rugged cliffs and dense native bush, offering hiking trails with breathtaking viewpoints.

PHOTOGRAPHING PIHA BEACH

Photographers will find Piha Beach a dream location. When my mission is to take some quality photography there are a few things I consider:

  • Plan around tides: During high tide, as you’d expect, waves reach farther up the beach, leaving smooth, reflective sand as the water recedes. These reflections add extra depth and drama to to an image and definitely why I visit during this time.
  • Visit during golden hour: Golden hour at Piha Beach is pretty stunning. The afternoon light creates a stunning glow against the dark sand, while as the sun sets the colours and light becomes more dramatic. For the best results, arrive about an hour before sunset. This will give you time to line up the perfect shots.
  • Lion Rock: Piha Beach’s most recognisable feature, making it a versatile subject. Its dramatic shape works beautifully as a central focal point. Alternatively, you can use Lion Rock as a supporting element, framing it within the surrounding beach or add a human element for depth and scale.

ACTIVITIES BEYOND THE BEACH

While Piha Beach is a star attraction, the surrounding area of the Waitākere Ranges offer plenty of activities for those who are lovers of nature and adventure:

  • Hiking: Trails like the Mercer Bay Loop, Comans Track and Omanawanui are just some of my favourite walks in the Waitākere Ranges. They each provide incredible, panoramic views of Auckland and the coastline.
  • Lookouts: If you’re not up for a hike but want to see some incredible views, there are plenty to explore in the city. Here are 10 stunning lookouts you can find in and around Auckland.
