MOONSCAPE OVERLOOK LOCATION
Moonscape Overlook is a hidden gem located in Wayne Country, southern Utah.
HOW TO GET TO MOONSCAPE OVERLOOK IN UTAH
Getting to Moonscape Overlook isn’t difficult but it does require navigating through remote and slightly rougher terrain.
Hanksville is the closest town, and if travelling from here you’ll be starting your journey on Utah State Route 24. It’ll take you approximately 35 minutes which includes Factory Butte Road.
The route is easily accessible, but it’s essential to come prepared. I found it helpful to download my maps offline due to limited reception here. I definitely would have got lost without it.
Once you’re on Factory Butte Road you’ll find that this will take you right to Moonscape Overlook. For the exact coordinates, see below:
38°27’05.8″N 110°50’16.6″W
DO YOU NEED A 4x4
I’d highly suggest a high-clearance vehicle as the road to Moonscape Overlook is rocky and can be challenging to drive with loads of deep indents and bumps. While a 4WD isn’t necessary in dry conditions, it may be a good idea if there is a bout of bad weather.
Even so, make sure to double-check road conditions before setting out.
CAN YOU WALK ON AROUND MOONSCAPE OVERLOOK
Yes, Moonscape Overlook is an expansive open space so you can walk freely. However, I cannot stress how important it is to be cautious. The cliff edges are steep, with a sheer 1,400-foot drop, so if you’re afraid of heights you might want to think twice about standing next to the edge. As you explore, the rugged terrain demands careful footing, but I can confidently say that the views are worth the effort.
PHOTOGRAPHY AND DRONE RESTRICTIONS
Moonscape Overlook is a dream for Utah travel photographers, especially during sunrise and sunset when the light paints the landscape.
I walked away from this morning having captured hundreds of photographs. You’ll also find as the light changes, the otherworldly terrain does the same so there are never-ending opportunities.
Also, drones are permitted, and capturing aerial views of the badlands below is a must if you have this in your photography kit. Just remember to fly responsibly, respect the natural environment and others enjoying the space.
IS MOONSCAPE OVERLOOK IN UTAH SAFE IF TRAVELLING SOLO
Moonscape Overlook is generally safe for solo travellers. I even felt safe driving during the early hours to catch a sunrise (doors locked, of course). The route may be remote, but it’s straightforward, and many visitors, including solo adventurers, make the journey without issue. There were definitely more people than just myself at the lookout solo. As long as you are prepared with offline maps and a reliable vehicle, you should feel comfortable exploring this incredible spot on your own.
HOW CROWDED IS MOONSCAPE OVERLOOK
Moonscape Overlook is relatively remote in Utah, so it tends to be less crowded than more popular tourist spots in Utah. However, the stunning views and unique landscape have started to draw more attention, particularly among photographers.
If you visit during sunrise or sunset, you may encounter a few other visitors, especially those looking to capture the perfect shot. I visited in the morning and being completely transparent it was much busier than I had anticipated. You’ll need to arrive early to secure one of the good spots. However, in saying that everyone was so lovely and super considerate, if you wanted a particular shot all you needed to do was ask. Also despite being busy, the area is vast enough that it rarely felt crowded, too.
ACCOMMODATION NEAR MOONSCAPE OVERLOOK, UTAH
There are no accommodations available at Moonscape Overlook in Utah however camping is an option. Since it’s located on Utah BLM land, there’s no cost to visit or stay. But there are no amenities – toilets, water and packing in and out all of your trash will be solely your responsibility.
For those seeking more conventional accommodations, Cathedral Valley Inn on State Route 24 is a convenient choice, particularly if you’re also visiting other incredible destinations like the Bentonite Hills (which should definitely be on your list – guide here). Hanksville also offers additional lodging options if you prefer an area with more choices.
WHAT IS BLM LAND IN UTAH
BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land in Utah encompasses vast areas of land that are open to the public for recreational activities like camping, hiking, and photography. These lands are typically undeveloped, offering an authentic experience of Utah’s natural landscapes. While camping is free on BLM land, it’s essential to explore responsibly and leave no trace.
