Boynton Canyon Trailhead is conveniently located just a 15 minute drive north of West Sedona. The trail winds through the Coconino National Forest, giving you easy access to some of the region’s most stunning landscapes and trails.

In addition, people also consider Boynton Canyon as one of Sedona’s energy vortex sites, attracting those interested in spiritual experiences.

BOYNTON CANYON TRAIL PARKING

Parking at the Boynton Canyon Trailhead can fill up quickly, especially on weekends and holidays, so it’s best to arrive early to secure a spot. We started the trail just before 9AM on a Friday in May and found parking relatively easily. However, by the time we returned, parking was much more challenging. If the official lot is full, roadside parking is available as an alternative.

There is a parking fee for the main lot so make sure to bring cash. Also note that parking requires an America the Beautiful Pass or a Red Rock Pass.

BOYNTON CANYON TRAIL TO SUBWAY CAVE

The Boynton Canyon Trail to Subway Cave is hike worth exploring as it is renowned for its dramatic red rock formations contrasted by its lush canyon scenery. I was blown away by the diverse landscape. There is a mix of everything, from towering canyon walls, to desert flora, and shady forested areas.

The trail itself was rocky in parts but overall well maintained. Most of the track is shaded, but some sections are exposed to the sun. Also, if Subway Cave is on your list to visit, following the track on AllTrails may help you avoid missing the right-hand turn.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Many people visit Boynton Canyon Trail, so expect crowds, especially during peak season. As mentioned above, we visited late May and it was busy but didn’t feel crowded. At times there was no one else on the trail around us.

However, as suggested with the parking, start early to avoid crowds and the midday heat. The trail is most enjoyable in the cooler months of spring and fall. Additionally, bring plenty of water and snacks, as there are no facilities.

Generally, weekdays and early mornings are your best bet for a quieter experience. Also for photography, it’s ideal to get some of that beautiful, soft lighting if starting earlier.

PHOTOGRAPHY

This trail is a photographer’s dream, no matter what time you visit.

Being constantly surrounded by red rocks, it feels a little otherworldly. My highlight was definitely the panoramic view from the top of Subway Cave. The cave itself is pretty epic and perfect for that Instagram moment but the views that face out from the top I think are even better. It offers an unobstructed look at the red rock formations, reaching all the way back to Sedona township.

Even during late morning, when the sun was a little more harsh and shadows were much more prominent, this place photographed extremely well.
