Artist Point is located in Yosemite National Park, California. Nestled above the famous Tunnel View, Artist Point sits at an elevation of 4,400 feet and provides a more secluded experience with panoramic views of Yosemite Valley.
ARTIST POINT YOSEMITE PARKING
To access the Artist Point trail, park at the Tunnel View parking lot. The trailhead is located just behind the right-hand side of the car park.
We expected parking to be difficult, but since we arrived two hours before sunset, we found that people were constantly coming and going, making it relatively easy to find a spot. However, as sunset approaches, the parking lot can fill up quickly. It’s a good idea to arrive early to secure a spot if you’re wanting to enjoy sunset from here.
ARTIST POINT YOSEMITE TRAIL
The Artist Point Yosemite trail is a hike that takes you through beautiful forest and offers stunning views of the Valley along the way. Since the Artist Point walk is a there-and-back route, you’ll need to gain some elevation for those views. With most of the hike to the viewpoint being uphill it can be quite challenging. But once at the top, you’ll be happy you did it as you’ll rewarded with breathtaking views.
From this vantage point, you can see iconic landmarks such as El Capitan, Half Dome, and Bridalveil Fall. All framed by the surrounding cliffs and lush forest.
KEY INSIGHTS
Duration: 1 hour
Length: 3.2 km | 2 miles
Elevation: 232 meters
Difficulty: Medium
Type: There and back
Open: Check the current conditions here.
This walk is also a part of the Pohono Trail so if you’re interested in doing an extensive hike you can include the Four Mile Trail too. This is much longer, at 27.5km one way, so be prepared.
Inspiration Point: As we had time we also included Inspiration Point to our Artist Point hike, ticking off Inspiration Point first. It does offer a similar view so either would be great but after seeing both I did prefer Artist Point. As it is situated a little further down the valley, it had a perspective that was closer to what you would see at Tunnel View. It also included a small lookout over Wawona Road.
Tip: Be prepared for mosquitoes, especially during warmer months. Make sure to bring bug spray and clothing that will help you cover up. They were absolutely rife on this trail.
ARTIST POINT VS TUNNEL VIEW
While Tunnel View is one of Yosemite’s most iconic viewpoints, offering easy access and classic views of El Capitan, Half Dome, and Bridalveil Fall, it can get crowded, especially during peak times. Artist Point on the other hand, provides a much more secluded experience. There are fewer visitors and as explained above, gives an elevated perspective of the valley. We still stopped at Tunnel View a few times but glad we also ticked of Artist Point in Yosemite as it was nice to see the Valley from a different vantage point with a quiet atmosphere.
BEST TIME TO VISIT ARTIST POINT IN YOSEMITE
The best time to visit Artist Point, Yosemite is during the early morning or late afternoon. Sunrise and sunset offer the most dramatic lighting, painting the valley in hues of orange and pink. Although, if you’re visiting at sunset, be prepared to hike back in the dark, and bring a flashlight or headlamp to ensure a safe return.
