Kent Road in the last few years has blown up as being one of the most famous photography spots. However, if you’re looking for a similar view but less well-known, Arawhata Road is for you.
WHERE TO FIND ARAWHATA ROAD
Arawhata Road is located on the South West side of the mountain so it takes a bit longer to get to if travelling from New Plymouth. This does have it’s benefits as it usually means this spot is much quieter than other photography locations and isn’t as well-known.

PARKING
Parking is really straight-forward but can be a little precarious. As it’s found right in the middle of farmland you’ll need to park up alongside the side of the road. Be careful here as there will be vehicles traveling at speed.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
I always say that the best times to visit any location when photography is involved is either sunrise or sunset. Arawhata Road is no different. I visited during sunrise, and it was incredibly peaceful with no one else around and only a couple vehicles on the road. I imagine sunset would offer a similar experience, potentially with more vehicles but as it is a remote location, it will be far more minimal than other photo spots around Taranaki.
ACCOMMODATION NEAR ARAWHATA ROAD
One of the best accommodations near Arawhata Road has to be The Nest. It’s a stay that offers stunning views of Mount Taranaki and the ocean, surrounded by tussock grasslands. Featuring a phenomenal outdoor tub and stargazing and is also only 20 minutes from Arawhata Road.

Aroha Treehouse: A stay that is perfect for nature lovers and is the most unique stay out of the these suggestions. You’ll see why with its seclusion, amongst the forest, stunning views and sustainable features. It also has a super cozy interior with handcrafted furniture, and a spacious deck which make it a peaceful retreat amid the treetops.
King and Queen Hotel Suites: If looking for somewhere that is located in the heart of New Plymouth, you can’t go wrong with this stay. It’s a lux accomm with easy access to cafes and restaurants so perfect for city lovers.
Mangorei Heights: Another nature based stay and is perfect for easy access to Mount Taranaki’s hiking trails. The views are incredible, and it features a relaxing outdoor tub for post-adventure rejuvenation. Alongside some lovely scenery you really can’t go wrong.

HENRY PEAK LOOKOUT
Henry Peak Lookout, 30 minutes from Pouakai Tarns, offers panoramic views of Mount Taranaki and beyond. It’s an ideal spot for photography, especially at sunset when the light casts a golden hue over the region’s peaks and valleys.
EGMONT LIGHTHOUSE
Egmont Lighthouse, built in 1864, sits on Taranaki’s western coast. Undoubtedly with Mount Taranaki as a backdrop, this historic landmark offers some pretty incredible photo opportunities. The contrast between the lighthouse and the natural landscape makes it perfect for capturing anytime of day.
POUAKAI TARNS
The Pouakai Tarns offer stunning reflections of Mount Taranaki in small alpine lakes. Accessible via a challenging three-hour hike, these tarns are best photographed at sunrise and sunset for breathtaking mirror-like reflections of the peak.
THREE SISTERS AND ELEPHANT ROCK LOOKOUT
The Three Sisters and Elephant Rock are iconic rock formations on Taranaki’s coast. Best photographed at this black sand beach at low tide, or alternatively from the lookout just after Mōhakatino and Tongapōrutu Beach.
LAKE MANGAMAHOE

KENT ROAD
Despite being an absolute fan of Arawhata Road, Kent Road is an absolutely stunning photography spot. It’s well-worth visiting both if you can! It might be a little more popular than Arawhata Road but it’s beautiful in its own right. Just be prepared as being closer to New Plymouth means that you’re less likely to have this spot to yourself.
