Start at the northern end of Whangapoua Beach and follow the track. This includes crossing a stream, navigating some rocky sections, and winding through a bush path for around 20 minutes. The trail can get slippery in places, and always check tide times to avoid any tricky crossings.
It’s an ideal summer destination when it’s warm enough to spend a day here. For even better views, take the short but steep side track up to the lookout point. Good footwear helps here and the coastal panorama is absolutely worth the scramble.
2. TAIRUA
Tairua offers a relaxed coastal vibe with its sheltered beach and harbour setting, making it a favourite for those who want to experience one of the best beaches in the Coromandel that’s also close to town.
Aside from the beach where you’ll find swimmers, surfers and fishermen, a highlight is the short climb up Mount Paku. This is a volcanic cone that rises right behind the town and a track that winds through native trees, delivering panoramic views from the summit. From the top you’ll see Pauanui, Tairua Harbour, Slipper Island and Shoe Island. It’s a quick hike with some steep sections, but it’s worth adding to the list.
3. ŌTAMA
Just a short scenic drive from Kūaotunu, you’ll find Ōtama Beach, a serene 2km stretch of brilliant white sand. Lined with iconic pohutukawa trees that burst into red blooms in summer, the beach is bordered by the gentle Otama River on one side, creating a peaceful spot for swimming, sunbathing, or enjoying a picnic in the shade.
I’d highly recommend an afternoon here followed by an evening watching the sun set, it’s pretty stunning. Also make sure to not miss the rope swing at the far right end of the beach.
4. OPITO BAY
Opito Bay provides a long, peaceful expanse of sand on the southern side of the Kūaotunu Peninsula. This bay is much quieter than some of the other best beaches in the Coromandel but it’s perfect for those seeking a laid-back escape. It has clear waters that are ideal for swimming and snorkelling, plus rocky headlands that frame the views out to sea. At the eastern end, steps lead to a pā site which offers an elevated perspective over the bay and coastline. It’s one of my favourite views in the Coromandel, so I highly suggest sunrise – it’s well worth the early start.

5. CRAYFISH BAY
Just a quick stroll around the headland from Opito Bay lies Crayfish Bay, a compact and secluded cove with strikingly clear turquoise water. It’s not exactly a beach but it deserves a spot as one of the best beaches in the Coromandel.
Enclosed by white stone cliffs, it’s a perfect spot for swimming, cliff jumping (where safe), or simply lounging on the rocks while enjoying the dramatic surroundings.
To access it, walk along Opito Bay Beach until you spot a white post marking a narrow path heading right. Follow this short trail across farmland for about five minutes, and you’ll emerge into the peaceful bay. It’s a great add-on, especially if you’re already exploring the Opito area.
6. TE KARO BAY (SAILORS GRAVE) & OTARA BAY
Te Karo Bay, often called Sailors Grave, is a scenic and historic spot with golden sand, good swimming and kayaking opportunities, and a memorial to a sailor from the 1840s. Shaded picnic areas under pohutukawa trees make it ideal for a relaxed day. From here, a well-formed track over the headland (about 20 minutes each way) leads to the even more secluded Otara Bay – another stunning, lesser-known beach with beautiful rock formations and clear waters. Matapaua Beach is another quiet gem on the Kūaotunu Peninsula. With only a handful of houses along its shoreline, and Otama and Opito close by, it often goes amiss.
This tiny bay boasts soft golden sand, classic overhanging pōhutukawa trees, and clear waters. The swimming is a little more exposed than the calmer spots at Opito or nearby Crayfish Bay so it’s best to check tides and conditions.
The rocky shores at either end invite some easy exploring, while to the right (as you face the water), a set of stairs leads to a ‘goats track’ that takes about 15 minutes to reach an even more secluded smaller bay. It’s the perfect peaceful spot for a picnic, with views that stretch across to Whitianga and Hahei. Often you’ll have it all to yourself, especially midweek or outside peak summer – just make sure to pack grippy shoes for the track.
