HISTORY AND SIGNIFICANCE OF THE CROWN RANGE

The Crown Range road has long been an essential route connecting Queenstown and Wanaka. Originally used during the 19th-century gold rush, the path was a vital link for miners seeking their fortunes in the Otago region. Over time, it has evolved into one of the most scenic drives in New Zealand.

WHY VISIT CROWN RANGE SUMMIT?

The Crown Range Summit Lookout offers an incredible vantage point, showcasing some stunning Central Otago views. On clear days, you can see Queenstown, the Shotover River, and even the edge of Lake Wakatipu.

Also, if you’re passing through from either Queenstown or Wanaka, I’ve found that it’s one of those places that requires minimal effort to visit, so well worth the stop.

PLANNING YOUR TRIP TO VISIT CROWN RANGE SUMMIT

As mentioned earlier, the Crown Range road connects Queenstown to Wanaka, making it a convenient stop during a South Island road trip.

From Queenstown the drive takes approximately one hour, winding through mountain passes and offering other stunning views along the way. From Wanaka, the drive is shorter, taking around 50 minutes, with similarly striking landscapes.

While the road is well-maintained, it is important to prepare for sudden weather changes, especially in winter. Before setting out, consult Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency for road updates to ensure safe travel. Winter conditions may require chains, particularly after snowfall.

IS IT SAFE TO DRIVE THE CROWN RANGE ROAD

The Crown Range road is safe for most vehicles, but does require some care especially in winter with icy conditions. You’ll notice it’s quite windy, so if you’re prone to car sickness, consider sitting in the front seat. Summer driving conditions are much easier, but if you’re wary of driving along roads with sharp corners the Kawarau Gorge route via Cromwell and State Highway 6 is another option. This road is often used as an alternative when snow makes the Crown Range road impassible. However, if you opt for this route obviously you will miss out on Crown Range Summit.

WHAT TO BRING

At 1,121 meters above sea level, Crown Range Summit often experiences cool breezes and temperature drops due to its elevation. The best way to prepare for cooler conditions is to dress in layers. Staying warm and bringing a phone or camera to capture views at the summit are the only things you need. Last time I visited, an extra layer was definitely needed in order to stay that little bit longer to enjoy the view.

THINGS TO DO AROUND THE CROWN RANGE SUMMIT

Cardrona Hotel is one of New Zealand’s oldest and most iconic pubs. Known for its rustic charm, the hotel is an inviting spot for a hearty meal or a pint. The shop front has become a favourite backdrop and really highlights it historic roots.

Arrowtown is closer than Queenstown or Wanaka to the Crown Range Summit and 100% should be on your list of places to visit. This charming, gold rush-era village will captivate you with its quaint streets, boutique shops, and preserved heritage buildings. This is one of my absolute favourite places to visit when in the area and is particularly beautiful in Autumn.

Hiking in the mountains a great opportunity to immerse yourself in some of Central Otago’s incredible landscapes. There are so many to explore. One of my favourites near Wanaka is the Roys Peak track. It has some of the most stunning views of the surrounding mountains and Lake Wanaka. If you need more convincing check out my 5 reasons why you should hike Roys Peak.

PRE-TRAVEL TIPS

There are a few things that I’d suggest before heading on your trip to Crown Range Lookout. The first would be to check the weather forecast before visiting, as sudden changes are common in high-altitude areas. Second is drive cautiously, especially in winter, and adhere to posted speed limits to navigate the road’s sharp bends safely. Third, take your time at the summit to fully appreciate the views and relax during your road trip. Finally, fourth and most important; respect the environment by leaving no trace.
