WHY CONSIDER SOLO TRAVEL IN UTAH
Utah is more than just a beautiful destination; it’s one of the safest states in the U.S., ranking well on safety scales for low crime rates and well-maintained parks. Each year, many solo travellers choose Utah for its vast trails, scenic drives, and charming small towns.
I also found Utah’s small towns incredibly welcoming, and major cities like Salt Lake City and Moab are no different. Utah’s outdoor scene was the main attraction for me to visit and being from New Zealand, I had high expectations of what this could look like. Thankfully, Utah is extremely accessible, especially when it comes to hiking.
Exploring Utah solo also allows you to move at your own pace, stop wherever the scenery inspires you, and enjoy the peace that comes with solo travel. In my guide on the 5 Essential Tips: What I learnt on a solo road trip through Utah, I highlight key learnings from my week road trip that may help you, too.
WHAT HELPS UTAH FEEL SAFE FOR SOLO TRAVELLERS?
As mentioned, on the safety scale, Utah consistently ranks as one of the safest states in the U.S. When wondering how safe is travelling Utah solo it’s comforting to know that this state has low crime rates compared to national averages. This is particularly true in Utah’s national parks, where security measures and helpful staff make a safe environment for visitors. Still, with any destination, it’s wise to stay vigilant and be mindful of your belongings, particularly in more crowded spots or parking areas. And in remote spaces, staying aware of your surroundings is key.
One of Utah’s primary safety concerns relate to its diverse outdoor terrain. With mountains, deserts, and canyons, the region is beautiful yet rugged. Summer temperatures in southern Utah can soar above 100°F, making heat exhaustion a real risk. Meanwhile, winter brings snow and icy conditions to the northern and higher-altitude areas, requiring planning around weather conditions crucial for a safe experience.
Before embarking on a solo trip, it’s essential to familiarise yourself with the unique challenges each season brings. Checking local weather reports and specific trail conditions is key to a safe adventure. The National Park Service (NPS) provides up-to-date information on trail conditions. This includes weather alerts, and safety tips, making it a valuable resource for solo travellers.
Additionally, downloading offline maps and packing appropriate gear, including sunscreen, plenty of water, appropriate clothing, and maps can help ensure you’re ready for any conditions.
HOW TO GET AROUND UTAH SAFELY
I found renting a car was the best way to explore Utah. A rental provides flexibility, especially for reaching remote trails and scenic spots. Renting from Salt Lake City or Las Vegas is convenient, and these hubs have multiple rental options. Public transportation options are also limited, particularly in the more remote areas where some of Utah’s best sights are located.
In my experience, Avis was reliable and extremely helpful, especially for those traveling from outside the U.S. I booked a Jeep Wrangler last minute and for me was a great choice due to Alamo not accepting my international card.
For those planning to explore rugged areas such as Bentonite Hills or Moonscape Overlook, consider renting a high-clearance vehicle. An SUV or a 4×4 is much better suited for off-the-beaten-path spots. I found that having a 4×4 provided extra security and prevented potential issues when navigating Utah’s mixed road conditions. How safe is travelling Utah solo is sometimes down to choices. For example choosing a rental that included emergency tools, such as a tire repair kit and jump cables, was a game-changer.
BEST TIME TO VISIT UTAH FOR A SOLO TRIP
The best time to visit Utah depends on what you’re looking to experience. The spring months (April to June) and fall (September to November) are often considered the best times for solo travel in Utah. During these periods, temperatures are mild, crowds are manageable, and natural features like the desert blooms and fall foliage add incredible colour to the landscape. I found my visit in May to be just this, beautiful weather and comfortable temperatures, perfect for a road trip.
According to the National Weather Service, spring and fall also tend to have more stable weather patterns, reducing the risk of encountering extreme conditions. When thinking how safe is travelling Utah solo, you do need to consider the weather forecasts. In the summer, temperatures in southern can be intensely hot, which can make certain activities, dangerous. Winter can bring a magical snowy landscape, but it’s essential to check road and trail conditions, as some areas become inaccessible due to snow.
For those interested in astrophotography, Utah’s parks are also part of the International Dark Sky Association network. These are some of the clearest night skies in the country. Autumn is an ideal season for stargazing, as skies are often clear and temperatures comfortable.
PACKING ESSENTIALS FOR SOLO HIKERS
If one of the reasons why you’re in Utah is to hike, you’re in good company. As you would know, packing the right gear is essential for the feeling of safety. Starting with a reliable backpack and adding the must haves like a water bladder, food and a first-aid kit are smart additions.
No matter how safe it is travelling Utah solo, pepper spray can add an extra layer of comfort. It’s legally carried in Utah and a great reassurance if you’re a solo female traveller. Although I never felt unsafe I found that carrying one helped me feel prepared. Utah’s rugged terrain is beautiful, but it requires proper preparation.

STAYING ALERT AND TRUSTING YOUR INSTINCTS
While Utah is safe, being aware of your surroundings is essential. Wildlife is active in many areas, especially in the national parks. Keeping a respectful distance and following park guidelines can minimise risks.
Being mindful and trusting your instincts goes a long way, too. If a trail or area feels too isolated or a situation feels off, don’t hesitate to turn around. Solo travel demands flexibility, so consider carrying a well-planned itinerary but with some wiggle room for spontaneous changes.
