Glacier Point lies at the end of Glacier Point Road in Yosemite National Park. It’s roughly a 30-mile drive from Yosemite Valley. Expect the drive to take around an hour, as the road winds up into the Sierra Nevada mountains. Even though it seems like a long one way journey, driving Glacier Point Road immerses you in incredible forest scenery, with several lookouts along the way. It’s definitely well worth the drive.

HOW TO GET TO GLACIER POINT

Reaching Glacier Point is easiest by car. If you’re starting from Yosemite Valley, take Wawona Road (Highway 41) south for about 14 miles. The left turn onto Glacier Point Road is unmissable. You’re then on a straight run through beautiful forest before reaching the end of the road and parking area.

GLACIER POINT PARKING AND PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Parking at Glacier Point is straightforward but during peak hours, can be limited. The parking area operates as a one-way loop, meaning you’ll continue on the loop when you’re ready to leave. During peak season, arriving early and exercising patience is crucial as spaces fill up quickly. When we arrived about 30 minutes before sunrise, plenty of spots were available; by the time we left an hour later, the lot was almost full.

For those who prefer not to drive, Glacier Point Tours provides services to and from the Glacier Point. The tour operates roughly from late May through October, aligning with the road’s seasonal opening. Yosemite shuttle services, even though great to use for those exploring Yosemite Valley, don’t venture to Glacier Point Road.

Glacier Point is also a popular hiking destination, ideal for those hoping to experience sunrise or sunset at Glacier Point and continue along scenic trails. Many visitors choose to take a one-way bus ticket up and hike down to Yosemite Valley, or vice versa, taking scenic trails like the Four-Mile Trail or Panorama Trail.

SUNSET AT GLACIER POINT

Once you reach the Glacier Point parking lot, it’s just a short walk to the viewing area that spans the entire ridgeline. Here, you’ll get panoramic views of Half Dome, the mountain peaks and Yosemite Valley.

Sunset at Glacier Point is really something. As the landscape transforms, the granite faces of Half Dome and surrounding peaks catch the golden hues, creating a soft, even glow across the valley.  Whilst we visited during sunset Half Dome and the surrounding mountains almost were a hue of gold.

If you enjoy stargazing, Glacier Point is also an excellent place to linger after sunset, as the lack of city lights and the park’s elevation provide excellent visibility for this.

The only down side to visiting at sunset was the crowds, as naturally the evening attracts more visitors. However, Glacier Point is an expansive area and allows for plenty of room to spread out, making it easier to find your own quiet corner to enjoy the sunset.

SUNRISE AT GLACIER POINT

For early risers, sunrise comes with the advantage of fewer visitors, providing a more peaceful atmosphere. When we visited only a handful of people were around, allowing us to explore the viewpoint and the scenery without the crowds. The lighting at sunrise also brings magic to Glacier Point. The first light illuminated the mountains and then slowly rose up directly behind Half Dome, changing the landscape minute by minute. Aside from the quiet and being able to experience this place without the crowds, this was one of my favourite things about arriving for sunrise.

A morning visit also allows you to enjoy the cooler mountain air and potentially tackle nearby hikes before temperatures rise.

SUNRISE VS SUNSET

Choosing between sunrise or sunset at Glacier Point can be tough, as both showcase Yosemite’s landscapes at their best. Sunrise offers a quieter, more peaceful experience, perfect for those looking to enjoy Glacier Point undisturbed. With fewer people, capturing photographs is easier, and the cooler morning temperatures make it an ideal time to explore, especially if you’re planning to pair your visit with a morning hike.

On the other hand, sunset offers a more colourful sky, just adding to the natural beauty of Yosemite. And if you plan to stay for stargazing, this is the perfect place to do so.

Ultimately, my favourite was sunrise. The lack of crowds, being able to explore all corners of the space and watching the sun come up directly over Half Dome was an incredible experience.

However, whether you choose to visit at sunrise or sunset, no matter what time, you’re in for a treat.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Aside from time of day, there are some other considerations for the best time to visit:

Weekday vs. Weekend

To avoid the heaviest crowds, aim for a weekday visit. Weekends at Yosemite are busier, and Glacier Point is no exception. No matter if you visit for sunrise or sunset at Glacier Point, weekdays offer better parking opportunities. A weekday visit also provides more flexibility to explore the lookout and surrounding trails without larger crowds.

Off-season

To catch the best sunrise or sunset at Glacier Point, consider planning your visit during the shoulder seasons. The shoulder seasons (spring and fall) offer quieter experiences and pleasant weather. In spring, waterfalls around Yosemite Valley are usually at their peak. In fall, visitors enjoy fewer crowds and autumn foliage. According to the National Park Service, visiting Glacier Point during these times reduces waiting time and adds to the natural beauty visible from the lookout.

While we went during the first week of June, leading into the busier time, we were still able to experience most of the park without the crowds through careful planning.

Seasonal closures and weather

Yosemite’s mountain weather can change quickly, so make sure to check conditions before your trip. The road to Glacier Point closes from around November to April, depending on snowfall. It’s best to prepare for both warmer and cooler temperatures, as conditions can vary even within the same day.
