A BIT OF HISTORY

St. Paul’s Rock is made up of ancient volcano remnants that erupted 20 million years ago, which can be seen throughout the Whangaroa Harbour area. The volcanic rocks were scattered thickly over the landscape and sea, and over time, the loose debris was washed away, leaving behind only fragments that were held together by natural cement. As a result, St. Paul’s Rock appears rough and exposed, like natural aggregate concrete.

Captain Wilkinson of the sealer ship Star is credited with discovering Whangaroa Harbour in 1807, marking the first European sighting of the area. The name ‘St. Paul’s’ was given to this rock in the 19th century because of its dome-like resemblance to St. Paul’s Cathedral.

STUNNING VIEWS

St Pauls Rock offers breathtaking views of the Whangaroa Harbour and surrounding landscape. The trail to St Pauls Rock is relatively easy. It starts walking through bush and after roughly 10 minutes opens up to a clearing. Five minutes from here there is a short climb that requires holding and using chains which will get you to the top. Don’t worry, if I can do it, so can you.

We were there for sunrise, this I can highly recommend, although any time of day will be spectacular.

HOW TO GET THERE

Getting to St Pauls Rock is fairly easy. We were traveling from Tauranga Bay, so only a 20 minute drive one way. If you are coming from Kerikeri, it will take you roughly twice the time.

Although there is no official parking there is space on the road and it’s quite easy to see where the start of the trail is.
