RIPPON WINERY

Rippon Winery is located in Wanaka and is known for its award-winning biodynamic wines. Additionally for its incredible views of Lake Wanaka and the Alps (as seen in the image below). In my opinion it’s one of the best Autumn destinations as the surrounding vineyards are ablaze with colour. Sipping on wine while overlooking the stunning scenery is an experience not to be missed. Just be sure to make a booking in advance outside of peak times to ensure your visit.

WANAKA LAKE

Located in the heart of the Southern Alps, Wanaka Lake is one of the most picturesque lakes in New Zealand. During the Autumn months, the trees around the lake change colour, creating a stunning display of reds, oranges, and yellows. Stunning mountains also surround the lake, creating incredible photo opportunities.

If visiting for the first time the famous Wanaka Tree has to be a stop you make, along with a walk through Wanaka Station Park.

There are some amazing places to eat here, my favourites recently being Arc and Francesca’s. But to secure a table make sure you book in advance.

ROYS PEAK

Roys Peak is an icon located in Wanaka that provides breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Wanaka and the surrounding mountains. This popular destination is particularly beautiful during autumn when the surrounding hills and trees are a vibrant mix of red, orange, and gold. It’s a moderately challenging hike that takes around 5-6 hours to complete but is a must-do for any adventurer.

I visited at end of April, which was perfect. Starting before sunrise to get to the summit meant experiencing one of the best Autumn destinations surrounded by vibrant colours and minimal crowds.

ARROW JUNCTION LOOKOUT POINT

Arrow Junction lookout point is located on the Crown Range Road between Wanaka and Queenstown. From here, you can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

In autumn, the view is particularly beautiful with the surrounding hills a patchwork of autumn colours. Ultimately making it the perfect place to stop and take in the beauty of the South Island during this season. Also when I’ve been there, it’s never been too crowded so a great place to grab some photographs.

ARROWTOWN

This historic gold-mining town is located just a short drive from Queenstown. Unquestionably it’s the perfect place to see the autumn foliage which turns the streets into a riot of colour.

Take a stroll through the historic town centre, where you’ll find a variety of boutique shops, cafes, and restaurants.

Also, for some great picture opportunities I would visit the Old Police Station (Historic Police Camp in Google Maps) and Wilcox Green Park.

QUEENSTOWN WINERIES

If you’re a wine lover, then the Queenstown Wineries aren’t to be missed. There are a variety of different wineries to choose from, each offering a unique selection. Some of my favourite wineries in the area include Amisfield Bistro and Cellar, Wet Jacket Wines, Mt Rosa, Kinross Cellar Door and Bistro, and The Winery (Arrowtown). Many of the wineries also offer stunning views of the surrounding mountains, undeniably making for a perfect backdrop with a wine in hand.

CARDRONA HOTEL

Nestled in the heart of the Southern Alps, Cardrona Hotel is a historic stopover that exudes an old-world charm. This hotel was previously established in 1863 and is a favourite for travellers and locals alike. The hotel’s picturesque location, set amid beautiful tussock-covered hills, makes it a perfect stop for a hearty lunch or a refreshing drink. Whether you relax on the veranda or by the cozy fireplace, Cardrona Hotel is a must-visit for anyone exploring the best Autumn destinations in the South.

CROWN RANGE SUMMIT LOOKOUT

The Crown Range Summit Lookout is a stunning lookout that offers spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. At 1,121 metres above sea level,  it’s the highest road in New Zealand, making it a unique destination for any road-trip. Even though it is windy, the view from the top is well worth the effort, offering breathtaking views of the mountains, valleys, and rolling hills of Central Otago.
