When visiting Auckland and looking to explore beyond the city, some of the best Waitākere Ranges Lookouts are just a short drive away. Renowned for its breathtaking views and incredible scenery, the west coast is a must-see destination when visiting New Zealand.

It’s also a perfect spot for hikers, photographers, and anyone craving the outdoors. So, if dramatic cliffs, black sand beaches, and lush native forests interest you, then you’ve come to the right place.

In this guide we’ll highlight the best Waitākere Ranges lookouts with tips to help make the most of your visit.

Starting off with one of the classics–Mercer Bay Loop is an ideal trail for anyone new to the area and looking for a short yet scenic walk in the Waitākere Ranges. This loop track can be completed in 30-40 minutes and offers incredible coastal views across Piha, Karekare and Whatipu beaches.

Keep in mind that it begins and ends with an uphill section, regardless of the direction you choose. However it remains super accessible, making it perfect for beginners and families. For a deeper dive into this track, check out my Mercer Bay Loop guide.

TE WAHA POINT

Te Waha Point is one of my favourite lookouts in the Waitākere Ranges. This is because it offers some of the best coastal views and is a lesser-known trail. Previously you could access this short walk from the end of Piha Beach, however with the floods two years ago, this section of the track is closed. Now, the best starting point is from Anawhata Road.

The road is at a higher elevation so you will be walking downhill at first and uphill on your way back. But don’t let that hinder you. From the lookout, you’ll enjoy views stretching north over Whites Beach and up the coast. Also, if you have some extra time combine this walk with Anawhata Beach lookout for sunset.

MURIWAI SCENIC LOOKOUT

Muriwai Scenic Lookout is a must-visit for those who like a combination of both beach landscapes and unique wildlife experiences. From August to March, the lookout is the best place to observe the gannet colony. Here, the birds nest on the cliffs, close enough to observe. Parking at the lookout provides easy access to viewing platforms which are just a brief stroll. This is also where you can take in stunning coastal views.

Also, if you’re looking to explore the beach itself (which stretches for an impressive 50 kilometers), a quick five-minute drive down Waitea Road will lead you to Jack Butt Lane, where you can get access.

ANAWHATA BEACH LOOKOUT

Anawhata Beach Lookout is one of the more secluded spots in the ranges, perfect for those seeking a little peace and quiet. It’s accessible only via a gravel road, followed by a small walk, making it slightly harder to reach than some of the other lookouts.

Once you arrive you’ll see there’s a small carpark found before the gate. This gate doesn’t open so from here on out, you’ll be on foot. However, continue along this road and on the bend to the right hand side you’ll spot a path. This will lead you straight to the lookout, with incredible views of Anawhata Beach and the surrounding hills.

My favourite time to visit is at golden hour or sunset. If you’re wanting to spend some time here pack a picnic and pillows to create a setup for an unforgettable evening outdoors.

COMANS TRACK

Comans Track is great option for those looking for a walk through both lush native bush and to see plenty of Waitākere ranges lookouts. It’s a straightforward trail to follow, is well-maintained and offers some incredible views. It’s also an ideal choice for first-timers to the area as this 7.2km walk also includes Mercer Bay Loop.

Just to note that this track can get quite busy, especially on the weekends but as most trails on the west coast, I found it to be a bit quieter in the afternoon. Early mornings are also an ideal time to visit as the cooler temperatures make for a more comfortable stroll. For more insights, check out my full guide to Comans Track.

OMANAWANUI

Omanawanui Track is one of the most rewarding hikes in the Waitākere Ranges. Not only due to the views but it feels like quite the success once you finish. As a part of this hike you’ll ascend over 2,400 stairs for one of the best lookouts. With breathtaking panoramas of the Manukau Harbour, Whatipū Beach, and the surrounding rugged ranges.

I recommend visiting this track during golden hour. Not only will you have the best light but it’s also much quieter on the trail than during the day. Afterwards consider visiting nearby Whatipū Beach to enjoy an incredible west coast sunset.

PIHA BEACH ROAD

Chances are if you’re visiting some Waitākere ranges lookouts you’ll be driving along Piha Beach Road. As you could probably guess, this iconic road leads to Piha, one of Auckland’s most famous beaches. Piha Beach is known for its black sand, powerful surf, and towering Lion Rock.

Whilst driving along the coastline you’ll be treated to some incredible views and thankfully there are also a few lookouts where you can pull over and spend some time to really enjoy it.

HUIA POINT

Huia Point is a great place to stop and stretch the legs on your way through the Waitākere Ranges. From the lookout, you can enjoy sweeping views of Huia Bay and the entrance to the Manukau Harbour.

This is a popular spot so it can get busy during summer but it’s another great lookout, and one that’s a little different than some others further into the Ranges.
