While the Northern Hemisphere experiences winter December to February, New Zealand enjoys its summer months. Even though it’s a great place to visit no matter season, summer is when New Zealand comes to life. Long days are filled with loads of activities, outdoors and beautiful scenery.
THINGS TO NOTE
Daylight hours: New Zealand experiences long daylight hours during summer – perfect for all those outdoor activities. On average, from December through to the end of February you can expect around 14 to 16 hours of daylight.
Weather expectations: Summer in New Zealand is usually quite consistent but it’s always best to check and stay updated since occasional winds and sporadic rainfall can occur. For weather readings check out MetService or alternatively my favourite app Yr.
Holiday dates: Even though it is peak season in New Zealand from December to March, these are the best months to visit for great weather and fun, summer activities. Holiday dates roughly start from just before Christmas to early-mid January. This is when you can expect most cities to be quiet and the beach towns to be much busier than usual. We also have public holidays through-out these months, too so make sure you make a note of these if you want to avoid the crowds.
1. SUMMER SUN
Spending time in the New Zealand summer sun is glorious. As mentioned above, our daylight hours during summer in New Zealand are extensive so there is plenty of it to be enjoyed. The average temperatures in New Zealand during summer range from early 20’s to 30 degrees celsius (68 to 86 degrees fahrenheit).
This is the perfect temperature for summer beach days as the water is warm and provides lots of opportunities to get outdoors and explore.
Just to note; New Zealand’s location also means that there is a thinner ozone layer, intensifying the sunlight. Don’t let the cool breeze fool you and take precautions against the harsher sun exposure. Using sunscreen and other sun protection is an absolute must.
2. OUTDOOR ADVENTURES
Summer in New Zealand beckons outdoor enthusiasts with a variety of activities to suit every taste. Whether you’re into hiking, swimming, surfing, boating, or any water sports, the options are abundant, making it a haven for those seeking an outdoor adventure.
For fellow hiking enthusiasts, New Zealand is a dream destination. If you’ve followed my other New Zealand blog posts, you’d know hiking is one of my go-to activities. In this guide, I’ve included visuals of my favourite hiking spots in New Zealand. From the stunning landscapes of Fiordland National Park to the tranquil beaches of the Coromandel and the incredible landscapes found in Northland, each adventure is made better by the summer sun.
The combination of extended daylight hours and summer temperatures creates an ideal setting to tick these experiences off your bucket list.
3. BEACH ESCAPES GALORE
New Zealand boasts a plethora of pristine beaches, and summer is the perfect time to experience them. My favourites are located in Northland, Coromandel and my hometown, Pukehina. They are also highly accessible. You will find that one or even a few are within driving distance, especially in the North Island.
From the white sands of Cathedral Cove to the picturesque Tauranga Bay, beaches in New Zealand are the ultimate place to relax, sunbathe, and indulge in water activities whilst also enjoying incredible coastal landscapes.
There are also plenty of beaches that have campsites. It’s the perfect season to pitch a tent and freedom camping is also do-able if you have a self-contained vehicle.
4. STUNNING SUMMER SCENERY
New Zealand’s scenery is downright stunning, no matter what season you visit. However accessing certain locations is much easier in the summer months.
You’ve got the impressive Southern Alps, the pristine beaches, and the jaw-dropping fjords in Fiordland. New Zealand doesn’t mess around when it comes to natural beauty, and across both the North and South Islands you’ll find it quite easily.
If there is one other seasonal scenery to escape to, seeing the lupins in the South Island is one I would highly suggest.
5. SUMMER IS THE FESTIVE SEASON IN NEW ZEALAND
New Zealand’s summer is not only about beaches and BBQs but it is also inclusive of the festive season buzz. From lively music festivals to local events, the whole country comes alive. Kiwi celebrations can easily transition from sun-soaked days into vibrant, spirited nights.
Whilst you’re here I would highly suggest to get involved in one of the many day festivals, and other activities that encompass the Kiwi summer holidays, like markets and wineries.
