For most people when travelling the South Island, they have at least one hike planned. Roy’s Peak I’m hoping, is a part of that plan as it has some of the most spectacular views. I can’t wait to share everything you need to know about experiencing this place for yourself.
SOME QUICK THINGS TO NOTE
Location: You can find the trailhead a short, 10 minute drive from Wanaka town centre
Duration: 6 hours (fitness and posing for the gram dependant)
Elevation: 1,310 meters
Difficulty: Medium-Hard
Need to have: Water, hat, sunblock and snacks.
1. THE INCREDIBLE VIEWS
Now, the number one reason why you should hike Roys Peak, New Zealand is obvious.. Everyone has seen that photo. Even though it’s partially for the gram, the views are worth the effort to get to the top.
Not only is there that particular viewpoint but along the trail there are places to stop and soak in the stunning views of Lake Wanaka and the surrounding mountain ranges. Also that view, isn’t even the top of the mountain which means that it just gets better over time.
We started the hike before dawn so there wasn’t much to see much on our way up. However, as a group we wanted to make sure that we were at the summit for sunrise. And how spectacular it was. Not only did we have insane views, but the early start also saved us from getting sunburnt and helped us avoid the crowds that started making their way up as we descended. I’ve heard sunset here is just as stunning but if you are wanting to limit the amount of people that are up there with you, I would suggest sunrise.
2. IT’S A DAY HIKE
I’m 100% a fan of multi-day or overnight hike but with Roys Peak being a day hike there is the benefit of being able to fit more into your itinerary. And with views as magnificent as this, you really can’t go wrong.
Along with all the beautiful places to see there are also great activities in the area, too. Can also suggest for activities to look into GetYourGuide, there are plenty to choose from. From a Jet Boat Ride on Clutha River to a Lake Wanaka Happy Hour Cruise or if you’re really wanting to send it, you can do a Tandem Skydive Experience. No matter what you choose, you’ll have a blast.
3. IT’S IN THE SOUTH ISLAND OF NEW ZEALAND
The first thing that comes to mind is why wouldn’t you want to venture here? Even though I live in the North Island, the South has something special about it. The hike up Roys Peak in New Zealand is just the tip of the iceberg.
There are so many fantastic things to do and see on top of hiking Roys. I’ve been to the South Island a few times over the last few years and each has provided to be just as amazing as the last. The South Island also has many other hikes and areas to explore, some that I am still yet to tick off my list, too.

4. YOU CAN ENJOY SOME WINE AFTER THE HIKE UP ROYS PEAK IN NEW ZEALAND
Wanaka boasts a few great wineries. Rippon Winery is my favourite as it’s not only known for its award-winning wines but its incredible views of Lake Wanaka and the Southern Alps, too.
Speaking of wine, if you are venturing beyond Wanaka I would highly suggest making the drive along Cardrona Valley Road and over the Crown Range to Queenstown. Here, there are a few more wineries to choose from each offering a unique selection. Some of my favourites in the area include Amisfield Bistro and Cellar, Wet Jacket Wines, Mt Rosa, Kinross Cellar Door and Bistro, and The Winery (Arrowtown). Many of the wineries also offer stunning views of the surrounding mountains, making a perfect backdrop to recover from hiking (image examples below!).
5. IT'S A WELL MAINTAINED TRACK
The fifth and final reason why you should undertake Roys Peak in New Zealand, seems like a small reason at first but holds some significance. The trail is exceptionally well-maintained, thanks to it crossing private land. We are fortunate that the owner grants permission for public use and while there is no entrance fee to hike Roys Peak I would highly suggest you contribute a donation at the start of the track.
BONUS THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
- When doing the hike up Roys Peak in New Zealand be warned that there aren’t many places where it plateaus. The switchbacks are the main course for this hike and all of it is uphill or downhill. Don’t say I didn’t warn ya.
- It is possible to hike Roys in the winter but you will need all of the necessary equipment.
- The track is closed annually for lambing season. This is from 1 October to 10 November.
- There is no shelter on the track so it’s open to all elements. Please make sure you have the necessary equipment to make sure you have the best and safest experience whilst hiking.
- There is a carpark and on road parking but it is limited, so the earlier you arrive, the better.
